10 days in crete relying on local tours on my own
by Grace
Hi,
I hope to visit Crete and spend 10 days there. I would like to see all the key sites especially the historical ones. I hope to join local day tours there. I think that its best to base myself in a few locations.
Can you please suggest the places where i should stay for 3-4 days or more and then visit sites around those bases in Crete?
And how do I get from one base to another if I do not drive?
Thanks so much.
West and East of Crete - Historic Sites
Hi Grace,
10 days is a good amount of time to spend in Crete.
You could base yourself in
Chania town, in the west of the island, for the first part of your trip and take day tours from there.
Then you could base yourself in
Agia Pelagia in Heraklion, in the centre of the island, for the second part of your trip, and again take day tours from there, to the historic sites and museums.
To get from Chania to Agia Pelagia you could:
-
take the local buses, or
- arrange a
pre-booked transfer.
From Chania you can take day tours to:
-
Samaria Gorge-
Walking Tour of the Old Town-
Balos Lagoon-
Elafonisi Beach-
inland villages and the ancient site of ApteraThe historic sites you can visit in Heraklion region include:
-
Knossos Palace- Heraklion Archaeological Museum
You can arrange day tours to each of these.
The other sites do not have organised day tours but you could find a driver/guide to take you there:
- Phaistos and Gortys
- Palace of Malia
AccommodationIn Chania we suggest staying within the walls of the old town, to soak up the atmosphere, perhaps staying in a little pension such as
Casa Leone, or
Pension Eva which is more affordable yet still charming..
In Agia Pelagia we suggest the
Out of the Blue resort because of its wonderful leafy green gardens, or
Andy’s Apartments as a cheaper option, close to the beach.
