Crete - Heraklion

Images Crete - below are some of our favourite photos of Heraklion Town. Heraklion is the capital of Crete and a vibrant modern town, many of the historic buildings have been destroyed, so the few examples of architecture dotted around the town are like gems that pop up every now and then. Many visitors come here to visit the archaeological site of Knossos, which is the oldest known civilisation in Europe, and located only 5 km outside of town.

Bembo Fountain in Kouranrou Square, Heraklion

Images Crete - above you can see the Bembo Fountain, dating from 1554, one of the few remaining Venetian structures in the city, which has been partially destroyed. This fountain is located in Kournarou Square near the outdoor markets. A cafe sits right next to it, and this makes a lovely place to stop and rest after negotiating the marketplace.

Liondaria Fountain Heraklion

Images Crete - above you can see the Morosini Fountain in one of the central pedestrian squares of Heraklion, a very handy meeting place, most often referred to as the 'Liondaria' in relation to the four lions on the fountain centrepiece.

The fountain was a wonder in 1628 as it was the first time the town had fresh running water. Venetian rulers built the fountain and channelled water 15 km along a viaduct to achieve this feat.  From then on, the place became a central hub and meeting place, which has continued today, although only birds play in the water.

"See you at the Liondaria!"

Venetian Loggia, Heraklion

Images Crete - above you can see the Venetian Loggia in central Heraklion, which is on 25 August Street, in the pedestrian zone. This beautiful building dates from 1628, and was nearly destroyed but has been fully restored and now is the home of the Heraklion Town Hall. This is another great meeting point in the middle of town, close to the Lion fountain.

"See you on the steps of the Loggia at 10 o'clock!"

Old Port and New, Heraklion

Images Crete - the restored fortress of Koules, sitting in the Old Harbour of Heraklion, from where you can see over to the modern ferry port where the ferries arrive and depart for Pireaus and the Greek islands.

Each year in summer, the fortress is the venue for outdoor activities such as music, theatre and cinema, making the most of the atmosphere inside this beautifully restored fortress.

Chania Town

Below are some of our favourite images from Chania town. We are glad to show you some of our best-loved aspects of the capital of western Crete, rich in history and culture.

Chania old harbour, showing Fort Firca and the Maritime Museum

Crete images - above you can see the Old Harbour of Chania with the ochre walls of the Maritime Museum on the right, and the wide esplanade next to the harbour or limani on the left. This museum has an extensive collection and is well worth a visit, especially if combined with a visit to Fort Firca on the point. From shells to ancient naval architecture and a Minoan ship, this collection extends from the Bronze age to today.

Akti Koundourioti, Chania

Above the esplanade you can see a number of neoclassical and historic buildings in various states of restoration and disrepair, some of which have been beautifully restored and converted from family homes to boutique hotels, which provide wonderful views across the port.

The one on the left with white walls and exposed stone corners is the Casa Leone Boutique Hotel. This small hotel is dreamy and full of character, as it is within a restored 15th Century Venetian villa. The location on the harbour gives good views however it is directly above cafes and restaurants which can be full of noise and hubbub at night.

Chania Old Harbour and Lighthouse at dusk

Crete images - above you will see the romantic evening lights of the Old Harbour of Chania, with the Venetian Lighthouse and other lights reflected on the calm waters of the limani. This is the ideal time to stroll along the waterside and take an evening drink...and one of the times of day when it is easiest to fall in love with Chania...

Chania Venetian Lighthouse, dining by the bay

Crete images -above you can see some of the old and unused parts of the Topanas district of the Old Town of Chania. The juxtaposition of such dilapidated old buildings and walls and newly restored beautiful buildings is fascinating to explore throughout the narrow back lanes of this district.

Rethymnon Region

Below are some of our favourite images from around the Rethymnon region. Rethymnon in the central west of Crete has beautiful beaches on the north and south coasts, agricultural lands and high mountains including the rugged Psiloritis range in the middle of the island, and plenty of history to explore. Places to visit include:

Lasithi Eastern Crete

Below are some of our favourite images of Lasithi Region and eastern Crete. Places to visit include:
