What to See In Crete

by Irem
(Turkey)

Hello, We will be travelling to Crete in 2 weeks. Arriving early morning on 18th and leaving early morning 22nd.

We have rented a car. Can you advice us a route for 4 days?

I was thinking to travel the east part and stay somewhere there for 2 days and come back to west to Chania for 2 nights and travel around there so that we can catch our early flight on 22nd.

Can you advise about the places to go and stay?

Thanks

East and West Crete

Hi Irem,

Because you have a car you can stay 2 nights in the east and perhaps 2 nights in the west. Below you can see many ideas of what to see, but of course in 4 days you may not fit them all into your schedule.

East Crete
In the east it would be nice to stay at Elounda, it is a pretty village and bay, and there are many good hotels there, we suggest the Elounda Palms or you can see many here Elounda Hotels.

Using this as a base, travelling daily from there you can see Spinalonga Island and Agios Nikolaos, explore the mountains and see Lasithi Plateau.

In the far east of Crete is a tiny quiet village called Kato Zakros and there is the Palace of Zakros Minoan site, and the Zakros Gorge. If you do drive there, we suggest staying one night at the beautiful villas there called Terra Minoika.

West Crete
In Chania, it is nice to stay in the old town, near the beautiful Venetian harbour, we suggest the Casa Delfino. This is a luxury small hotel in a beautifully renovated old mansion, tucked into the tiny narrow lane ways behind the harbour of the old town. Or perhaps you might prefer the more affordable Madonna Studios, with only five rooms, also in the narrow lane ways, this family-run pension lacks nothing of the hospitality and atmosphere in the historic zone.

In Chania town you will find many museums to visit, lovely old buildings of different architectural styles down by the old harbour, and plenty of good tavernas and cafes down by the water side.

From Chania you can visit many beaches by car, such as Falasarna, Balos Lagoon on a boat trip from Kissamos, or Elafonisi Beach on the far western tip of Crete, or south to Paleochora Beaches.

Or you can do a 16 km gorge trek on the Samaria Gorge Day Tour

For beaches closer to Chania town, you can visit Maleme, Stavros or Agia Marina beaches.
